Responding to a greeting of (Salam) in Prayer.

Q; Please advise whether Tirmidhi regards this as hasan, or more probably Za'eef Hadis, Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar, I asked Bilal: How did Allah's Apostle respond to them as they greeted him while he was in prayer? Thereupon he said: He only made a gesture with his hands (in order to respond to the greeting). (Al-Tirmidhi #991)

A; All-Praise is due to Allah,

May I begin by saying may Allah reward you for inquiring about the authenticity of this Hadith...
It was narrated Abdullah ibn Umar, I asked Bilal: How did Allah's Apostle respond to them as they greeted him while he was in prayer? Thereupon he said: He only made a gesture with his hands (in order to respond to the greeting). (Al-Tirmidhi #991)
Al-Tirmidhi said, its Sahih.

Others have narrated it as Sahih as follows-
Albani said in his authentication of Sunnan Al-Tirmidhi no: 367 its authentic.

Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalaani said in fath al-baari 11/21 it is a sound Hadith.

Ibn Hazam said in the introduction to his book Al-Muhalaa: 3/80, we have not heard anything of it, but being Sahih (this Hadith), from authentic narrators of the Mosnad.

In another narration by Abu Dawoud Hadith: 925, and An-Nissa'ie Hadith: 1185, Narrated by Suhayb (May Allah be pleased with him) I passed by the Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) whilst he was praying and I gave him Salam, and he replied with a gesture using his hand. But I did not know except that he gestured back using his finger.

Abu Dawoud said in his letter to the people of Maccah: Every thing (Hadiths) that have been silent about, for verily is good (authentic).

Albani said in his authentication of Abu Dawoud and An-Nissa'ie, Hadith Sahih.

In regards to the Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gesturing in Prayer, it is meant that he raised his hand with out saying any word....

And Allah knows best...
